Diverticulitis is a condition that some people experience from time to time and can become quite troublesome if it begins occurring on a regular basis.

This condition can be defined as inflammation of an abnormal pouch that is located on the intestinal wall. Usually these pouches are going to be found in colon, also referred to as your large intestine. Once they have actually formed and are fully present, then the patient is diagnosed as having diverticulosis.

Usually individuals will have a higher tendency to develop this condition with age, with most occurrences happening in those older than forty.

The most notable cause of diverticulitis is a measure of high pressure distribution within the colon area. When this occurs, it causes the pouches of the intestinal lining to begin protruding outwards through the colon wall.

Another significant cause of the problem is due to lack of fibre in ones diet. Usually this can put those people already at risk at an even higher risk so if you've had the condition before, it's important that you pay attention to what you eat to avoid reoccurrence.

The symptoms of diverticulitis tend to vary on an individual basis, however usually at least a few are present.

They can also vary in severity, depending on how far the condition has progressed. Other factors in your life such as stress or a high level of physical activity can also make the symptoms worse in some people so if they are starting to show up, it may be time to rest and pay more attention to stress control.

Symptoms you experience can last from a few hours to over several days.

Normally what most people experience will be:

- tenderness, cramps or pain in the abdominal region. These will usually occur in the lower left side of the stomach however certain individuals are more prone to experiencing them on the right. Asian individuals who develop the condition usually often see the pain on the right side as opposed to the left. In addition to this, usually the symptom will get progressively worse when someone is moving around or is engaged in more intense physical activity.

- fever and chills are often accompanied with the pain in the abdominal region. One of the recommendations for those experiencing the condition as a way to deal with it are to drink plenty of warm liquids so this can also help to ease this symptom as well.

- Feelings of bloat, abdominal swelling or heavy gas.

- Diarrhea or constipation. Having diarrhea can be particularly problematic because this can cause an imbalance of the electrolytes in the body. Constipation as well can be equally bad and usually there is a pretty direct link to that and not consuming enough fibre in the diet.

- Nausea or vomiting. Nausea will obviously make you feel uncomfortable and can make it hard to get the nutrients you need from your diet if it persists. Vomiting on the other hand is similar to the issues with diarrhea and can cause dehydration along with electrolyte imbalances.

- Lack of appetite. Again a big problem with this will be getting enough calories and nutrients in to help heal your body and maintain your weight if it persists long enough.

So make sure if you are experiencing any of these symptoms that you go and discuss them with your doctor. Usually the tests that will be taken to determine whether in fact you do have diverticulitis will be a CT scan, which will show a thickening of the inflamed area or a test showing an elevated white blood cell count.

Your doctor may also want you to bring a list of what your diet is normally like as that could largely be something that needs to get taken care of. You yourself can also look into your diet and make some changes. If you don't eat many fruits or vegetables as it is, that is the first thing to do, as these will supply you with a good amount of dietary fibre.

Overall this is a condition that can usually be treated and managed quite well as long as you are willing to put in the effort to do so.
