What is Nystatin?

Thrush is an infection of the mouth. It is caused by Candida albicans which is a fungus. Candida infection can also occur in other places causing infant diaper rash or vaginal yeast infections. Thrush is mostly found in babies, toddlers, older people or people wit a weak immune system.

Causes of Thrush

Candida fungi in small amounts occur naturally in a normal healthy body. Their habitat is the mouth, digestive tract and the skin. Bacteria and other microorganisms help balance the growth of the fungi in the body. Using some medications and certain illnesses can cause the balance to be disturbed thus causing an overgrowth and results in infection or thrush. Medications like corticosteroids, antibiotics and birth control upset the balance of the microorganisms. Breast fed babies have also been known to pass the infection during their feedings.

Treatments of Thrush

There are many treatments for thrush. The medication can be in the form of tablets, lozenges or liquid. Nystatin is a liquid medicine and also comes in dissolvable table form for thrush. Diflucan is a tablet medication for thrush. Unlike Nystatin, Diflucan is taken once daily. Nystatin is taken up to three times a day. People with a weak immune system have a more difficult journey in trying to combat the symptoms of thrush.

Healthy children and adults can be treated effectively. Usually an antifungal medication is prescribed for 10 to 14 days. The treatment approach will be specific based on age and cause of infection. If a dentist diagnosed the thrush, they may recommend going to a doctor because the presence of Candida infection can be an underlying symptom for other illnesses that may have to be treated.

Nystatin is an antifungal medication. Yeast infections of the mouth are treated by taking oral nystatin. The oral tablets should be taken with a full glass of water. The troches should dissolve completely in the mouth. Chewing or swallowing is not recommended. One troche should be sucked on until it is completely dissolved.

The liquid should be shaken well before taken. Depending on the doctors instructions measure and pour the recommended dose in the mouth then pit or swallow.

Side effects of taking Nystatin

With any medication if any allergic reaction occurs consult your doctor. Allergic reactions may include difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, itchy eyes, hives, or swelling of the lips tongue or face. Most of the time side effects do not occur, but some have experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Any effects should be discussed with your doctor, but continue taking the medicine.

Drug interactions are not common since Nystatin is not absorbed by the body, but consult a doctor before taking any other medications. There are no known food, beverage or activity restrictions while taking nystatin.
