With the wide variety of weight loss diets and programs out there, it can be hard to decide which one will be best for you. More and more people however are recognizing the Medifast diet as a quick and simple way to have success with weight loss.

 

Basically, this plan is a program that is going to work by combining meal replacements along with real food. This is an important point because diets that have you solely eating meal replacements or eating food that is created by the program (such as Jenny Craig for example), are not really going to teach you good nutritional principles. Instead, you’ll be far better off if you aim to include variety in your diet, while still having success with your weight loss.

 

The Medifast main principle is that it is a 5 and 1 Plan. This means that you will eat five meal replacements on the program each day, along with one real meal. Having this real meal in there will both help to keep you satisfied and make the plan much easier to stick to in the long run.

 

Since you will be eating or drinking six times a day, this means you will never need to go more than two to three hours without some type of food, further helping to prevent hunger from creeping up on you and causing you to make unsound dietary choices.

 

In addition to these meals and beverages, you are also advised to consume 64 oz of water a day to help flush out your system and prevent eating due to thirst rather than hunger.

 

While following this program, you should be able to see between a two to five pound weight loss each week, but keep in mind that this is a fairly low calorie diet. As such, don’t attempt to do a lot of vigorous exercise while doing it, and if you happen to have a job that keeps you really active, it might be wise to add in one extra meal so that you don’t start to feel too fatigued to work.

When preparing the meal you are allowed to eat while on the program, you are advised to stick with lean meat choices such as chicken, turkey breast, fish, shellfish, canned tuna or salmon, lean pork, lamb, and then a green salad consisting of 1-2 cups of salad greens and ¼ cup of raw vegetables or 1 ½ cups of cooked fibrous vegetables.

 

Also keep in mind that Medifast is not a plan that you would use for months and months at a time. It is created for those who are very overweight and who are looking to remove the weight as quickly as possible. It is going to put you into a state called Ketosis, where your body will run off fat as a source of fuel instead of carbohydrates.

 

Some individuals find they feel fine when in ketosis, while others do not. Be sure also that when on this plan, you really do follow the water guidelines as simply being in ketosis does cause one to lose excess water from the body.

 

Once The Plan Is Finished

 

It’s advised that you follow the Medifast plan for a period of about 16 days. After this time, come off it and resume more normalized meals once again, and get yourself on a moderate exercise program to help maintain the weight loss.

 

If you would like to still lose more weight further, then you should go back on the Medifast diet after about a month or two of moderate dieting, cycling as needed.
