Leaky Gut Syndrome is a disorder where the intestinal lining of the digestive tract becomes more pentratable or leakier than normal. This is due to irritation. The small intestine is designed to let particles of digested nutrients to pass through its walls and into the bloodstream.

 

 

The intestinal wall may become more able to penetrate, due to a variety of different things, and less digested particles and toxins may be able to pass through and into the bloodstream. You can also go to your health care provider and have him prescribe the Intestinal Permeability Assessment test. With this test you drink a solution of mannitol and lactulose. Urine is then collected over a six hour time. If high levels of the molecules are found, you have Leaky Gut Syndrome. If low levels are found, it shows that you have a faulty absorption of nutritive material from the intestine.

 

 

There are many causes for Leaky Gut Syndrome. These causes include heavy metal toxicity, nutritional deficiencies, the use of certain medications. These medications include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen, and other medications such as prednisone, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and birth control pills.

 

Other causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome include pesticide residues, inhaled chemicals, environmental toxins, an excess of refined sugars in the diet, infections of fungi such as yeast, parasites or bacteria, chronic stress, food allergies, excessive caffeine, alcohol, and/or tobacco use. If you have a sluggish liver, thick blood, or a deficiency in the digestive enzymes or hydrochloric acid in the stomach, these may also cause Leaky Gut Syndrome.

 

 

If you are found to have Leaky Gut Syndrome, changing your diet is a big recommendation. You should eat foods that have antimicrobial properties. These foods include onions, leeks, radishes, hot chili, lemon juice, mustard, and rosemary. You should also eat foods that have detoxifying properties. These foods include cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sproutts, and brocolli. Eat plain organic unpasteurized yogurt.

 

 

It contains live active cultures called probiotics. Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as flax seed, salmon, tuna, and fish oil. You should eat comple carbohydrates that digest slowly that slowly increase your blood sugar levels. These foods include apples,, sweet potatoes, winter squash, and pumpkin. You should drink lots of purified water throughout the day.

 

 

You will want to avoid fermented foods and foods with fungi, simple or refined carbohydrates that quickly turn to sugar. These foods include sugar, foods with white flour, sugary soft drinks and juices. You also want to avoid artificial sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol, sodium nitrate, monosodium glutamate, trans fats, and preservatives.

 

 

You should also exercise. Exercise makes you sweat which helps your body get rid of many toxins. It also helps keep regular bowel movements. A brisk walk each day can help the digestive system function more efficiently.
