Foods To Avoid With Diverticulitis



Diverticulitis is a condition that occurs when there are small pockets that are formed in the wall of the intestine that are called diverticula. When these then become inflamed or infected the individual will start to likely experience some discomfort and problems in the body will arise.



There is some evidence that shows there are specific factors that can affect your risk for developing diverticulitis; age seems to be one predominant factor as is heredity. By far the biggest contributing factor however is diet.



If you are not getting a proper nutritional intake, chances are you are really going to be placing yourself at risk for developing diverticulitis. In today's world of fast food and processed goods, it isn't surprising that incidence rates are also growing.



If society wants to put a stop to this problem, better care needs to be paid to the foods we are putting in our mouths.



If one is already experiencing diverticulitis, a low-residue type of diet is recommended as this will help to decrease bowel volume and allow the infection time to heal. Your fibre intake should be brought down for this time period to around 10 grams per day. Do note however that this is only recommended for those suffering from the condition. If you aren't experiencing it yet, a totally different protocol is recommended.



When you are dealing with the condition, there are some particularly problematic foods to avoid. These include:


- nuts


- seasame seeds


- corn and corn products


- chilli peppers



Then the top foods that do not seem to cause people trouble when they are experiencing diverticulitis are:


- Chicken


- Skinless Potatoes


- Carrots


- Fish


- Bananas



Once you figure out which foods you are able to eat that do not bother you, it's a good idea to stick with them for the duration so you can prevent flare-ups from occurring.



To further enhance your knowledge, here is a general list of foods that most individuals can tolerate. Experiment with them and see how your own body reacts. If some seem to cause problems, be sure to eliminate them as well.



Grain Products


-enriched white bread, bagels, English muffins


-low fibre cereals such as cheerios, cornflakes and rice crispies


-arrowroot cookies, tea biscuits, soda crackers, plain melba toast



Fruit And Vegetables


-fruit juices (except prune juice)


-bananas, cantaloupe, canned fruit










-vegetable juices


-potatoes with the skin removed


-alfalfa sprouts





















Meat Products


-all meat products seem to be well tolerated, however avoid beans and lentils as they have a high fibre content.



Dairy Products


-most dairy products are also tolerated quite well however it is a good idea to monitor how you do on them or discuss their intake with your doctor beforehand.



You should also try and take in as much of the following as possible as they will help to ease symptoms also.



-plain water


-broth (bouillion or consumme)






-tea or coffee without creamer



As your symptoms of the condition start to lessen, then you can begin to increase the amount of fibre you are getting. Start slowly however to avoid any problems from occurring. Generally a smart idea is to add about five to fifteen grams every few days until you are up to an ideal amount for you.



A good diet to follow once you are back healthy and are now trying to avoid the onset of diverticulitis again is one that includes the following foods:


-whole grain products


-all the cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, swiss chard and so on.


-fresh fruit with skins


-potatoes with skins


-all bran cereals



If you have trouble getting a lot of these types of foods in, whether it is because of another particular health condition you have or diet you are on (for instance very low carbohydrate diets often lack fibre), then you should strongly look into supplementing your diet with a fibre supplement such as psyllium.
