For those who are currently concerned about the state of their digestive and bowel systems, they may want to consider a colonic or an enama. While both processes do relate to the elimination system in the body, there are some differences.

Colon hydrotherapy, also called a colonic or else colonic irrigation is a type of alternative procedure that currently doesn't have a lot of backing from medical experts. It is practiced more by natural paths and therefore is a type of natural medicine.

The term itself refers to the introducing of purified water into the colon, sometimes along with other substances such as organic coffee or minerals, as a way to release fluid and clear the colon.

There are a few different types of colonic cleansing practices that are performed and they vary in the amount of depth that is reached, amount of water that is used as well as whether or not they are performed by yourself or someone else.

Some individuals also choose to have a colonic done when they are suffering from constipation. Since they are not able to eliminate themselves, by having this done at least they will still be ridding themselves of wastes. Do note however that individuals who are using it for this purpose should still be looking into the underlying reasons as to why they are not able to excrete waste in the first place.

Often this could be something such as a lack of insoluble fibre in the diet, which is fairly easily remedied.

Furthermore, those who are suffering from heart disease or kidney disease should also be avoiding having this treatment done. They are only really meant to be done by those who are suffering from any anal pathologies that contributes to bowel perforation.

Also be aware that there is currently limited scientific research to back up this process. Proponents of it claim that it will help deliver better overall wellness and make some diseases such as chronic fatigue and arthritis more manageable, however this cannot be stated as fact.

Furthermore, the practice of having these done is only regulated in some areas of the United States where a few practitioners will go through a voluntary certification process in order to become certified with the Guild Of Colon Hydrotherapists.

Now to have a look at enemas. These are slightly different in that they are given primarily to help detox the bloodstream and are not solely for the purpose of trying to clean out the colon.

Additionally, there is a growing number of individuals who will also use an enema as a way to derive sexual pleasure with their partner. Usually the people using it for this reason are interested in inducing a form of pain or punishment during a domination style of sex.

Coffee is more often used in this procedure when done for health reasons than water is, as with colonics.

Additionally, the process of colonic irrigation works to irrigate the entire colon, the ascending, transverse and descending portions, therefore there is a great risk for the potential to cause a problem with mineral absorption. Often times up to 5 gallons of water is used, which is why it can be problematic.

An enema on the other hand uses just 32 ounces, which is just enough to fill the descending portion of the colon. This will have a much lesser impact on mineral absorption so there are fewer health concerns with this treatment.

There are also variations in enema's out there just as with colonics. The big differences are in the water temperature that is used. Some individuals choose to use cold enema's while others prefer warm or hot enema's.

Another difference between a colonic and an enema is that a colonic will involve many infusions of water into the colon while an enema is just a single occurrence. For those that get agitated with too much liquid going in, this makes an enema a better choice.

Finally, with a colonic, the fecal matter will exit the body out of a tube while with an enema the individual will usually sit on a toilet and let the water and substances coming out of the colon run out in that manner.

So before you rush out to have either procedure done, make sure you look into the differences between the two and what benefits they promote. It may be helpful to speak to someone who specializes in either treatment so you can get a good idea what to expect before hand. It will make the process much more relaxed and prevent you from experiencing any discomfort.
