First being recognized as a medical condition in the early 1800's, acute diverticulitus is a condition that can be quite troublesome for those who are affected. Diverticula are very small mucosal herniations that start to protrude through the intestinal layers as well as the smooth muscle along the openings of the colon.

This condition is often associated with those who have been consuming a low-fibre diet for an extended period of time, or with those who suffer from constipation or are obese. For this reason it is definitely a condition that at times can easily be prevented if proper care is made to ensuring your diet is sufficient.

The herniations that present themselves will create small pounches that line the mucosa and are usually observed in the colon. In particular, the sigmoid colon, which is the area where colonic intraluminal pressures are the greatest, are most commonly affected.

What occurs during the formation of this condition is that there is inflammation that begins to form on these diverticula. Fecal material or food particles that are not fully digested may start to collect inside of them and then will cause an obstruction and the overgrowth of colonic bacteria.

If there are recurrent attacks of diverticulitis (it becomes chronic), there can be a resultant scar tissue that is formed, which then leads to a narrowing of the colonic lumen. This can cause significant defecation problems in some individuals.

The frequency in the US of acute diverticulitis increases with age from less than 5% of individuals experiencing this problem before the age of 40 to greater than 60% experiencing at least some form of symptoms by the age of 85.

There will be different degrees of diverticulitis so some individuals may have it to a lesser extent and not even be fully aware of the condition. This is likely largely due to the type of diets that are common in North America right now; one where sugar and fat is high while fibre is low.

Diverticulitis also occurs a lot more often in Western developed countries, again for same reason as stated above. Getting more fibre in ones diet is not an extremely hard thing to do however it seems to be very lost on some people.

Interestingly, 70% of all cases of the disorder will be located on the left side of the colon, with the exception of when it occurs in Asian individuals. About 75% of reported cases amongst this population group have it on the right side.

Luckily of those who do develop diverticula, 80-85% will not see any symptoms while only about 3.5-4% will develop actual diverticulitis. Then, from there only another 15-20% of those people will go on to require surgery in order to effectively manage the condition.

When the few individuals who develop this condition do, they are more likely to see severe symptoms developing. Additionally, anyone who has comorbid conditions or is taking anti-inflammatory medications are also at risk for more severe symptoms.

Genetics is also believe to play some role in the development of the condition but it is still largely dependant on dietary factors. There is also no difference in occurrences among men and women so your gender does not come into play.

The final factor involved with the development that goes along with the incidence rates being higher in aged individuals is that there can be changes occurring in the collagen structure that leads to a weakening of the colonic wall as age increases. This puts someone at a greater risk once again.

So the big take home message here is that if you want to do everything you can to avoid the development of acute diverticulitis, your best bet is to begin eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. If that is simply not possible for whatever reason, then you should be looking to add a fibre supplement to your current diet to help increase your intake.

Be sure to increase fibre intake slowly as the body does need time to get used to an increased intake, but once it is higher, be sure you work on maintaining it into the future.
